The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
