Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the vandalism made him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
